There are few places as gorgeous as India’s Taj mahal.

One of the most well-known structures in the world, the Taj Mahal stands on the Yamuna River’s right bank., may be seen in Agra, India. This tomb was built in 1632 by Shah Jahan (r. 1628–1658) to store his favourite bride, Mumtaz Mahal, and his own remains.

It soon become a popular tourist destination. Tombs, a mosque, and guesthouses are all part of a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex. A crenellated wall surrounds the property on three sides.

Architect Ustad Ahmad Lahauri created Mumtaz Mahal’s residence.

Mughal architecture attracts millions of tourists every year (As of 2014). While the tomb was nearly finished in 1643, it would take ten more years to complete its final construction phase. If finished in 1653, the Taj Mahal complex would be the most expensive in the world at 32 million pounds (about $1 billion today). It was the court architect Ustad Ahmad Lahauri who was in command of the 20,000-person workforce responsible for construction of the Great Mosque of China. It was in 1983 that UNESCO named the Taj Mahal a cultural and natural wonder of the world, officially making it a World Heritage Site (UNESCO). It’s popular with a wide variety of folks.

There are influences of Mughal and Indian architecture in the Taj Mahal’s design. You may know it as Amiri Gur (the tomb timur, the progenitor of the mugual dynasty, in Samarkand). Charbagh Gardens and the hasht command of the nearby Shah Jahan Jama Masjid in Delhi were also influenced by Humayun’s Tomb (or architectural plan). For the first time, Jahan introduced white marble inlaid with semi-precious stones into mughal building. The structures improved as a result of his contributions.

Cubes with chamfered edges make up one side of the 8-sided building, which is approximately 55 metres long (one eighty feet). Two arched balconies flank the Iwan, framing the Pishtaq, or vaulted archway. When your object has chamfered edges, the pishtaqs design is clearly seen.

The Taj Mahal draws throngs of tourists due to its breathtaking beauty. More than 2 million people visited in 2001, and 7–8 million people visited in 2014, according to UNESCO data. In comparison to foreign visitors, Indian people are charged a much reduced admission fee. When it came to entrance fees in 2018, foreign visitors paid 1,100 rupees, whereas Indian citizens simply paid 50 rupees.

Tourists flock to the city in unprecedented numbers throughout the months of October, November, and February. If they want to avoid bringing polluting vehicles as close as possible to the site, visitors must either walk or use an electric bus from the parking lot. The Khawasspuras are now building a new visitor centre (northern courtyards). Visitors that stayed longer than their allotted stay time were charged in 2019.

For visitors and labourers in the little village of Taj Ganji or Mumtazabad, caravanserais, bazaars, and markets were established. More than 100 million people voted for the Taj Mahal to be included on a list of the world’s new seven wonders, which featured it as one of the seven modern wonders.

No additional fee is required to use the complex during the weekdays, which are available from six in the morning until nine in the evening (excluding Fridays, when it is open from 12 am to 14:00 pm for mosque prayers). Full moon nights, as well as the two preceding and following days, are ideal times to see the night sky, but not on Fridays or during Ramadan, which is the holy month of fasting.

The Taj Mahal is a regular stop for visiting dignitaries from other countries while in India. Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Bush, and Harrison have all been spotted on the site, as have Donald Trump and Justin Trudeau. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as well as Prince Philip, have also travelled to the United States.

The interior chamber of the Taj Mahal is more than just a collection of decorative features.. Pietra dura was not employed for this piece’s inlay work, which instead utilised pieces of precious and semi-precious stones. The south-facing entryway of the octagonal interior room faces the garden. About 25 metres (82 feet) in height, this “artificial” dome features a solar design. Ground-level pishtaq arches are topped by another arched structure about halfway up the wall, as seen from the outside. The outer window of each of the four balconies has an ornate screen attached.
