In 1975, communist forces took control of South Vietnam, and the country was unified the following year as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
The Vietnam War was the twentieth century’s longest and bloodiest conflict. This war was essentially a Vietnamese people’s long-term revolution. With creative guerilla tactics, territorial advantages, and a strong sense of success, Vietnam overcame the United States after nearly two decades of conflict.
