Zachary Taylor (November 24, 1784 – July 9, 1850) was an American military leader who served as the United States’ 12th president from 1849 to 1850. Taylor had previously served in the United States Army as a career officer, rising to the rank of major general and becoming a national hero as a result of his triumphs during the Mexican–American War. As a result, despite his ambiguous political ideas, he was elected to the White House. As president, his first objective was to keep the Union together.
